Glossolalia (Speaking in Tongues) in Early Church History - Quotes from Eusebius, Novatian, and Tertullian

Eusebius Pamphilius (c. AD 263 – 339): Church History, Life of Constantine, Oration in Praise of Constantine Chapter VII Quotes Irenæus (AD 140-203) 6. And in another place the same author [Irenæus] writes: “As also we hear that many brethren in the Church possess prophetic gifts, and speak, through the Spirit, with all kinds of tongues, and bring to light the secret things of men for their good, and declare the mysteries of God.” Novatian (210-280): Treatise Concerning the Trinity. Chapter 29. This is He who places prophets in the Church, instructs teachers, directs tongues, gives powers and healings, does wonderful works, offers discrimination of spirits, affords powers of government, suggests counsels, and orders and arranges whatever other gifts there are of charismata; and thus make the Lord’s Church everywhere, and in all, perfected and completed. Tertullian (c. 160 – c. 225 AD): Against Marcion, Book V , Chapter 8. Let Marcion then exhibit, as gifts of his god, some prophets, s

Truth and Transformational Christian Education

Excerpt from Welcome Speech, Graduation Exercise, 2012 ..... The goal of education is the acquisition and discovery of truth. Jesus declared to Pilate His mission as being a witness to the truth. Of course, Pilate was not in a position to accept such a position as worthwhile; for brute force and wisdom are two different worlds. History is witness to the fact that brute force has often tried to silence the voice of wisdom; while the purpose of wisdom has always been to introduce order into a world full of chaos. The word is supposed to calm the storms. Man lost that power when he fell from truth and disobeyed God’s word. But, the Word of God Himself incarnated as man and men marveled that even the winds and the storms obeyed His word. They obeyed, not just because He is God, but because the Wisdom and Truth of God has its finality in Him in bodily form. Truth is a difficult word in the modern context of things. The world is a dark habitation of skepticism, doubt, suspicion, mistrust, an

Miracles

I've seen the blind see and the deaf hear; I've seen lame limbs leap and tumors disappear; Yet, all these now seem like fleeting sparks Before the flame of love-ignited simple hearts- The miracle of innocence in the eyes of a child, Miracles of tenderness in a world grown so wild; Miracles that make truth glister and shine Through acts that are merciful, compassionate, and kind. The world seems infinitely void without the miracle of purity, The lightning and thunder color the dismal with riotous fury; Yet, this dismal cloud is rent when Love sheds all covering, Makes no pretense, desires no coloring; And, in the midst of a world consumed with passion and rage, Love breaks through as the miracle on God's precious stage -- The heart of man, the eyes of a child, the lips of a kind sage Touched by Love are God's miracles of boundless grace. What sparks of joy now break upon the horizon! It's the glimpse of God on one Human Face; The Son of Glory has come to embrace His

In Volatile Times...

There are certain things in life that are rock sure; place your feet on them when you can't be sure of anything else around: and, you'll make through these volatile times-- God has a path neatly carved for you!

CHRIST AND COMMUNISM Author: E. Stanley Jones 1st Edn: 1934; 2nd Edn: 1951 Indian Edition: 1963 by Lucknow Publishing House, Lucknow, India ISBN 81-87739-05-03 In Stanley's own words this book attempts to expound the Christian answer to Communism; the Christian answer is the Kingdom of God on earth. Some quotes from the book: The whole basis of society must be shifted form competition to cooperation. There are three great issues before India embodied in three persons: Mahatma Gandhi represents the demand for religious equality as he presses the rights of the Untouchables to temple entry; Doctor Ambedkar, the leader of the Untouchables, says he is not interested in this temple entry, his demand is for the doing away with caste--in other words, social equality; Jawahir Lal Nehru, the idol of the youth, represents the demand for economic equality. The first two men are free, the third is in jail, for the demand for economic equality is the most far-reaching and dangerous to the presen
